BACKGROUND: Issued Jul 1909 to commemorate the 500th Anniversity of Leipzig University. This attractive series of postcards consists of an unknown number of cards all depicting scenes relevant to the Leipzig University. Although unnumbered, the reverse side of these cards are identical in design and have the title "OFFIZIELLE POSTKARTE zur 500 JÄHRIGEN JUBILÄUMSFEIER DER UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG JULI 1909" - '

Leipzig University is located in Saxony and is one of the world's oldest universities being founded on 2nd Dec 1409 by Frederick I, Elector of Saxony and his brother William II. Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Wagner and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are all alumni of the university. In 1953 the university was renamed the Karl Marx University and it remained so until reunification with West Germany in 1991 when it reverted back to its old name.
