U1 - OFFICIAL UMSCHLÄGE
1 GROSCHEN

1st Jan 1872 with SMALL SHIELD. Not for use in Bavaria or Wurttemburg. Denomination 1 Groschen. Embossed stamp, Eagle without ribbons. The pre-printed stamp is the same as a Michel 4 from 1872 issue of "Kleiner Brustschild" (Small Breastplate/Shield) series. This envelope is the same as U3 only U3 has a large shield.

There are two major variations each with two minor variaions:

U1-I-A: The number "1" on the botton right-hand corner of the value stamp measures 3.5mm high and the envelope measures 147 x 84mm.
U1-I-B: The number "1" on the botton right-hand corner of the value stamp measures 3.5mm high and the envelope measures 148 x 115mm.
U1-II-A: The number "1" on the botton right-hand corner of the value stamp measures 4mm high and the envelope measures 147 x 84mm.
U1-II-B: The number "1" on the botton right-hand corner of the value stamp measures 4mm high and the envelope measures 148 x 115mm.
