MICHEL 544
SAAR PLEBISCITE
BACKGROUND: One of two stamps issued to mark the Saar Plebiscite, a vote that was to be held in Jan 1935 which would determine the future of the Saar region. The vote was intended for the people of the region to determine if they should be returned to Germany or to France. Over 90% voters opted for reunification with Germany, with 9% voting for the status quo as a League of Nations mandate territory and less than 0.5% opting for unification with France.
The 6Rpf stamp is a reference to the Saar region's main coal mining industry whereas the 12Rpf stamp is meant to show the Saar region as a part of a new aspiring Germany.
