CENTENARY of GOETHE's DEATH

BACKGROUND: This postcard depicts a head and shoulders side view of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German writer and statesman. Goethe was born on 28th Aug 1749 in Frankfurt and he died at the age of 82 in Weimar on 22nd Mar 1832. The postcard features a dark green 6 Rpf indicia stamp and was produced on buff card. The reverse side is blank.
VALIDITY: 1st Mar 1932 until 31st Dec 1935
As well as the official card there were several official cards with additional private printing.

The card below features the special cancellation used to commemorate Goethe's anniversary. The inscription on the cancellation is "Gedenkt der | DEUTSCHEN | VOLKS-SPENDE | FÜR GOETHES | GEBURTSSTÄTTE" - 'Commemorates the | GERMAN | PEOPLE'S | DONATION | FOR GOETHE'S | BIRTHPLACE'. This particular example was a local delivery in BERLIN on 22nd Mar 1932.CANCELLED on FIRST DAY of ISSUE

1. This first example of domestic usage is a card sent from KONSTANZ on 30th Mar 1932.2. The second example was sent to MUNICH from WERTINGEN on 5th Apr 1932. The message on the reverse side details the prices from the local pig market 'Pig market report April 5, 1932, Sow pigs listed 250, price per pair suckling pigs 35 - 40 RM'
3. The following domestically used card was sent from BAUTZEN on 13th Mar 1932 to DRESDEN-STREHLEN.
4. Posted on 8th Apr 1932 the following domestically used P213 postcard was sent from OFFENBURG to DRESDEN.
5. The following card was sent from APOLDA to LAGENSALZA on 20th May 1932.
6. Posted in HAMBURG on 15th May 1932 this card was destined for an address in BERLIN-WILMERSDORF.
7. This next example was sent to tthe Postal Director of Vienna, Ludwig Schuster, on 30th Mar 1932 from EMDEN.
8. The following example was a local delivery in DRESDEN on 17th Mar 1932.
9. Posted in the town of OCHSENHAUSEN (West of MUNICH) and delivered to MEMMINGEN (South of OCHSENHAUSEN) on 11th Feb 1932, this next card was sent to a photographic supplier and the reverse details an order for photograhic accesories.

1. The first foriegn usage card below was sent to ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, USA from BERLIN on 7th Apr 1932. This card has stamps to the value of 17Rpf which was more than the 15Rpf needed to cover the postage.2. Below is another card sent to the US, this time to BROOKLYN, NEW YORK on 5th Apr 1932 from EMDEN. This card is correctly franked with 15Rpf of stamps.
3. Another card sent to the United States, this time from BAUTZEN on the 24th Mar 1932 to KIRKWOOD, MISSOURI. The message on the reverse states "Dear Roland, The following postcard from the Deutsche Reichspost, issued yesterday, together with our warmest Easter greetings. We are expecting the people of Osnabruck with their three children this afternoon, as well as the people of Berlin with their two children and Irmas Brautigam. So the house will be full and we hope to have a happy Easter despite the very serious economic crisis and the constant business worries. We were very pleased that the stay in the south went well and that Ada also recovered well. Warm regards from house to house, Hugo"
4. Posted on 1st Apr 1932 the next card was sent to a Mr. Joseph Merz in CHICAGO, USA.

1. The following card was sent using glider mail and features a special slogan cancellation which reads "RHÖN-SEGELFLUG | WETTBEWERB | 1932" - 'RHÖN GLIDER COMPETITION 1932'EUROPEAN AIRMAIL

1. The next card was posted on train No. 1920 on 23rd Jun 1932 from HAMBURG, to the final destination of SOLINGEN.INVALID USAGE
9. The next P213 card was posted in BAD DUBERAN (MECKL) on 15th Sep 1937. The indicia stamp on this card was only valid until 31st Dec 1935 so the use of this example was after the expiration period. The post office has drawn a blue line around the stamp and added a large "9" in blue ink indicating that an extra penalty of 3Pf has been incurred due invalid postage (the fine for insufficient postage was 1.5 times the correct postage). There is also an additional red rectangular stamp inscribed "nachgebühr" or "additional fee"SPECIAL SLOGAN CANCELS
1. The card below was posted in SALZWEDEL on 8th Dec 1932. The handstamp was used every year from 1930 to 1936 and was inscribed "SALZWEDEL | Salzwedeler Baumkuchen | -ein schönes Geschenk" and a slightly modified version was used from 1936 to 1939.[BOCHMANN: Heft: 20, Page: 660, No.: 1]
2. Another card with a special cancellation this time sent on 21st Apr 1932 to MUNICH. The inscription reads "ALTENBERG | Bergbau-Wunder | 500 | Jahre | 15 Felsendome" - 'ALTENBERG | Mining Miracle | 500 | years | 15 Domes of the Rock'. This particular handstamp was used every year from 1932 until 1936.

3. The following P213 card was posted in BERLIN on 10th Mar 1932 and was sent to MÜLHEIM an der RUHR. The slogan is inscribed "Werdet | Rundfunkteilnehmer" - 'Become a Radio user', a popular slogan used to encourage the population to buy a radio.
4. Cancelled in MUNICH on 1st Mar 1932 the following card was sent to LANGENSALZA. The special cancellation reads "In JEDES | POSTPAKET DIE | DOPPEL DER | ANSCHRIFT | EINLEGEN!".
5. The next card was posted in HAMBURG on 17th Jun 1932 and was delivered to an address in DAHLENBURG. The slogan reads "LUFTPOST | BEFÖRDERT | BRIEFE-ZEITUNGEN-PAKETE" - 'AIR MAIL PROMOTES LETTERS, NEWSPAPERS and PACKAGES' This particular cancellation exits in a number of vaiations and was used in 17 cities every year from 1930 until 1940 and then again in 1944.
