U-BOOT SPENDE 1917
POSTCARDS

This series of un-numbered postcards features the artwork of Prof. Willy Stöwer. The cards were published by J.J. Weber of Leipzig and the set is entitled "U-BOOT SPENDE 1917" or 'U-BOAT DONATION 1917. Each card depicts the German submarine service in action, attacking and sinking shipping and has a unique sub-heading. There are two different designs: Type 1 with a normal postcard layout on the reverse and Type 2 with a 17 line inscription.

TYPE 1

No. 1

This card is titled "Deutsches U-Boot im Eismeer - Beschiessung von Alexandrowsk." - 'German submarine in the Arctic Ocean - bombardment of Alexandrowsk.' The port is no longer named Alexandrowsk and is now known as Polyarny and is located in the Russian region of Murmansk.

No. 2

This next card bears the sub-title "Versenkung eines feindlichen bewaffneten Truppentransporter Dampfers durch deutsches U-Boot im Mittelmeer." - 'Sinking of an enemy armed troop ship by a German submarine in the Mediterranean Sea.'

No. 3

This third card bears the sub-title "Französische Bark wird durch deutsches U-Boot im Atlantik versenkt." - 'French barque is sunk in the Atlantic by German submarine.'

No. 4

This fourth card bears the sub-title "Deutsches U-Boot im Gefecht mit einem bewaffneten Handelsdampfer im Sperrgebiet" - 'German submarine in action with an armed merchant steamer in the restricted area.'

No. 5

The fifth card bears the sub-title "Auf dem Kommandaturm eines U-Bootes (Plakat der U-Boot-Spende)." - 'On the command tower of a submarine (poster of the submarine donation).'

TYPE 2

No. 1
