The text below the image reads "Zwickau (Sachsen) Ingenieurschule"

'Zwickau (Saxony) engineering school'

Zwickau is, with around 87,500 inhabitants (2020), the fourth-largest city of Saxony after Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz and it is the seat of the Zwickau District. The West Saxon city is situated in the valley of the Zwickau Mulde, and lies in a string of cities sitting in the densely populated foreland of the Elster and Ore Mountains stretching from Plauen in the southwest via Zwickau, Chemnitz and Freiberg to Dresden in the northeast. From 1834 until 1952, Zwickau was the seat of the government of the south-western region of Saxony.

The engineering school was founded in 1897 to train technical specialists in the local mechanical engineering industry. Not far from the King Albert Museum, which opened years later, a new building was built for the school in 1902/03 based on plans by the Zwickau architect Paul Dreßler. The east wing was added in 1907.

Paul Kirchhoff and Leander Hummel founded the “Higher Technical School for Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering with preliminary classes” as a private school. After the First World War it was sold to the trade school association. Supervision was carried out by a school board, whose honorary members also included the wholesale businessman Simon Schocken. At times, the commercial school, a locomotive trainee school, the mining school, the brickworker school, a materials testing institute and a chemical laboratory were also united under the umbrella of the “United Technical Schools”.
