5 Rpf
Issued 1927 and the only series of pre-'Lernt Deutschland Kennen!' to feature a Friedrich von Schiller stamp. This is the ninth of 10 different postcards all with an artist's, hand-drawn image on the left pane, and a 5 Rpf Schiller stamp on the right.
The text below the image reads "Würzburg, die Stadt des Rokoko"
'Würzburg, the city of Rococo'
Würzburg is, after Nürnburg and Fürth, the third-largest city in Franconia located in the north of Bavaria. Würzburg is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Lower Franconia. It spans the banks of the Main river.
Würzburg is situated approximately 110 km west-northwest of Nürnburg and 120 km east-southeast of Frankfurt am Main. The population as of 2019 is approximately 130,000 residents.
The Würzburg Residence, featured on this postcard, was built in the Rococo (late Baroque) style between 1719 and 1744 on behalf of Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn. The builder was Balthasar Neumann. It was the seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops. In the European context, it is considered one of the most important residential buildings of the late Baroque and stands alongside a row of palaces such as Schönbrunn (Vienna) and Versailles.
