FRIEDRICH VON SCHILLER
5 Rpf
Issued 1927 and the only series of pre-'Lernt Deutschland Kennen!' to feature a Friedrich von Schiller stamp. This is the fifth of 10 different postcards all with an artist's, hand-drawn image on the left pane, and a 5 Rpf Schiller stamp on the right.
The text below the image reads "Marburg (Lahn), Glanzpunkt des Lahntals"
'Marburg (Lahn), highlight of the Lahn valley'
Marburg is a university town in the German federal state (Bundesland) of Hesse, capital of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district (Landkreis). The town area spreads along the valley of the river Lahn and has a population of approximately 76,000.
The image on this postcard is of Marburg Castle (The Landgrave's Castle) above Marburg's old town. Since its foundation stone was laid around the year 1000, the complex has served as a fortress, landgrave's castle and prince's residence and has been rebuilt and expanded many times. One of the highlights is the Fürstensaal, which, with a floor area of around 420 sqm, was the largest Gothic secular hall in Germany. The oldest parts of the Landgrave's Castle that are still visible from the outside date from the 13th century. The youngest building is the Wilhelmsbau (foundation stone laid in 1493), which today houses the University Museum of Cultural History.
