OFFICIAL POSTCARD

Issued 1st Apr 1900. This postcard was published due to a reduction in the local postal rate. The lowering of the local postage was due to the closure of the private city post offices, which were operated until 31st Mar 1900, by the Deutsche Reichspost.

This card has a print date code on the bottom right-hand side of the card, details below. There are two variations of this card, the first variant, Type 'A', measures 140 x 90mm and the second, Type B, measures 120 x 79mm. In addition there are two colour varieties for Type 'A' (Type Aa = grey and Ab = bright blue) and two for Type 'B' (Type Ba = grey and 'Bb' = bright blue) making 4 different versions.

To further confuse matters the 4 versions above also occur in two additional variants. The formation of the word 'Wohnung' has two versions, the first where the 'g' has two 'ears' on the upper circle of the 'g' and the left arm of the 'W' sweeps slightly to the left at the top. The second type, Wohnung Type II, has a thicker sngle 'ear' on the 'g' and the left arm of the 'W' does not sweep to the right at the top.

BERLIN

1. This P40-Ab-I postcard was sponsred by "Herrn F. L. Harnisch" Purveyor to Her Royal Highness Princess Friedrich Leopold v. Prussia.'

BRAUNSCHWEIG

1. Herzogliches Hofbrauhaus, Carl Wolters & Co. of Braunsweig was another beer supplier. Again the reverse side is used to place an order, on this occasion there are four choices: Light, dark, Export and Bock (when in season).

ELBERFELD

1. This P40-Ab-I postcard was sponsored by the Lord Mayor's Office in ELBERFELD.

ERFURT

1. E. Reum. This company supplies beer, in small containers, and always delivered promptly. The reverse side is for the customer to place their order for either dark beer, medium colour beer or Pilsner. In this case the customer has ordered 22 bottles of the dark beer (dunkel), my prefered choice too.

HAMBURG

1. The following card was sponsored by "Herrn Ludw. P. Jacobs | Hamburg | Zeughausmarkt 44."

HIER

1. This P40-Ab-II postcard was sponsred by "Herrn Marcus Boll" a bottled beer supplier from Hier.




2. This P40-Ab-II postcard is addressed to "Hannoversches Speditions- und Lagerhaus, Hier".

KÖLN

1. The reverse bears the inscription "Vereinigung der Privatbeamten im Justizfache in Koln. Vereinslokal: "Apostelnbrau" Apostelnstrasse 19".

LEIPZIG

1. To Mr. Wilhelm Bauer, Leipzig. The Festival Committee of the General Assembly of the VrKD (Association of traveling merchants in Germany). Event held in Leipzig in May 1900. Reverse is for visitor to select various items and advises sender to add a 3Pf stamp for the return postage.

POZNAN

1. Poznan Discount Society advertising the upcoming visit of their representative.

2. Below is another private postcard, this one bears the inscription "Katholischer Kirchen- Gesang- Versin | Ohne besondere Einladung | jeden Montag Abend und Uhr Probe." - 'Catholic church singing verse. Without special invitation, every Monday evening and rehearsal.'
