BACKGROUND: This stamp was issued on 2nd Oct 1944 and was the fourth and last 'Day of the Stamp' issued during the Nazi period. It was designed by Erich Meerwald and printed by the Vienna State Printing Works. Unusually for the Day of the Stamp issues, this one was made available in Oct at the end of the year, instead of the customary January release.
