BACKGROUND: This stamp was the first in a series of 6 issued on 13th Apr 1943 to celebrate Hitler's upcoming 54th birthday on 20th Apr 1943. Designed by Klein these stamps were printed photogravure at the State Printing Office in Vienna.

SPECIAL CANCELLATION: There was a special handstamp used in Amsterdam, Berlin, Braunau, Munich, Nurnberg and Vienna. The handstamp is inscribed "UNSER FÜHRER BANNT - DEN BOLSCHEWISMUS - 20.4.1943.' - Our Führer banishes Bolshevism'.
